The local YWCA is a special place for SPX employees at our Waukesha Power Systems Development (PSD) business. During consecutive “Day of Caring” events sponsored by United Way, SPX volunteers have donated many hours to renovate and maintain this 1898-built facility. Their hard work makes the YWCA a safer, more updated day-care and recreation site for children of Massillon, Ohio.
Pulling on the work gloves
From pulling up carpet and nails, and installing new flooring, to replacing the playset’s rusted nuts and bolts, employees worked well beyond their six hours of volunteer time to get the job done. Outdoor activities included cutting back shrubs, trimming tree branches, cutting down dead trees and weeding the yard. Between sanding and painting the front steps and railings, employees even dug trenches to help rain and melting snow drain away from the building.
Impressed board of directors
YWCA Executive Director Linda Nelson can hardly contain her excitement about all that SPX employees have achieved. The YWCA’s board of directors also was impressed. All volunteer work passed inspection and saved the organization significant expense. Previous improvements made by SPX volunteers include sealing a large deck, rebuilding a shed, painting walls and installing linoleum in the children’s lunch room. “They always go the extra mile and do more than what is asked,” says Linda.
Appreciation is the best reward
SPX employees at this Ohio location have participated in United Way’s Day of Caring for at least 13 years. They have volunteered at nearly every local United Way-sponsored agency – delivering meals, landscaping, doing carpentry work, painting and working with children. According to Dolores Hennis, SPX employee and volunteer, the hard work is well worth it. “It is so rewarding when we know we are appreciated for it, and people want us to come back.”
