The laying of the first foundation brick of Workshop 5 by SPX Chairman, President and CEO
Chris Kearney was the symbolic start for expansion of SPX’s DB Thermal Nigel Works in South Africa in 2008.
Building relationships
The event marked an important relationship-building visit in South Africa for Kearney, who met with SPX engineers, project managers, employees and contract workers at company Town Hall meetings.
Kearney answered many employee questions as he explained the company’s financial performance, its
global business strategy and SPX’s commitment to continued growth and expansion in South Africa.
Investment in South Africa
"We are pleased with the progress we’ve made to date and we’re focused on growing the business,” said Kearney, as he detailed the role SPX plans to play in helping meet South Africa’s growing energy infrastructure needs. “We plan to continue to invest in SPX to capitalize on global opportunities, including the substantial ones we see here in South Africa."
Kearney also met with SPX customers in South Africa, including Hitachi Power Africa, which last year awarded
SPX's Thermal Equipment and Services affiliate the largest SPX order in history – a
$235 million contract to provide critical products for
Eskom’s new Medupi power station. These products from SPX are designed to help enhance the plant’s productivity and efficiency as well as reduce emissions into the atmosphere.
A major regional provider
The DB Thermal business supplies cooling equipment and complete cooling solutions as well as thermal components for power plants. Together, they serve as a major provider of service for existing power plants in South Africa and its neighboring countries.
