With computer technology constantly changing and technically advanced features like electronic throttle control planned for its soon-to-be released models, Harley-Davidson® knew it had to stay on the leading edge of diagnostics to keep its service technicians knowledgeable, proficient and up-to-date — and its customers happy.
The solution — team up again with SPX Kent-Moore®, the SPX brand they worked with previously to launch the highly successful Digital Technician®. Introduced in 2001 after two years of research, that revolutionary diagnostics tool raised the bar for diagnostic tools in the transportation industry and quickly became the standard for Harley-Davidson dealers globally.
Making the Best Better
Over a 15-month period, Harley-Davidson and SPX Kent-Moore worked together to develop an even more powerful and versatile motorcycle diagnostic tool — Digital Technician® II. The tool boasts the latest technology and addresses the newest features on Harley-Davidson and Buell models.
Like its predecessor, Digital Technician II features proprietary software, custom engineered for Harley-Davidson. Integrated with off the shelf PC technology the enhanced diagnostic tool boasts the latest technologies including Bluetooth™ wireless.
It also incorporates the full range of Harley-Davidson service resources in a single tool, including service manuals, bulletins, dealership web portals, access to proprietary dealer management systems and other information previously available from multiple sources.
Service technicians no longer have to seek out information from various sources; they now have access to commonly used Harley-Davidson resources.
How It Works
As with the original Digital Technician, service technicians connect the Digital Technician II laptop computer to the Techlink™ II Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) which connects to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) on the motorcycle.
In addition to reading diagnostic trouble codes and data items, the Digital Technician II provides guided diagnostics with animated wiring diagrams, on-board electronic service manuals, Bluetooth-enabled Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) and access to other Harley-Davidson applications.
The combination of that hardware plus the SPX custom-designed diagnostics software is used by the technician to diagnose and service the motorcycle.
A Better Experience
When equipped with the Digital Technician II program, Harley-Davidson service and diagnostic technicians experience improved productivity. For service managers, it means being able to increased throughput. For Harley-Davidson’s customers, it means a higher level of service quality aimed at improving the overall Harley-Davidson experience.
The Digital Technician II is exclusive to Harley-Davidson and is used in their worldwide dealer network of 1500 dealers/service centers in approximately 70 countries.
