Power generation demands are strong across Europe. SPX’s Balcke-Dürr GmbH is helping to meet these needs by supplying turbine condenser, feedwater heaters and other components for a variety of power plant projects throughout the continent.
Among the company’s recent projects is the 750 MW unit of STEAG Aktiensgesellschaft’s hard-coal-fired power plant at Duisburg-Walsum in Germany.
In addition to the titanium-tubed turbine condensers and a total of 5 LP feedwater heaters, the scope of supply included 4 SNAKETM HP feedwater heaters of the header type, which in contrast to common practice, were installed horizontally instead of vertically. Most components were manufactured locally at Balcke-Dürr facility in Neubeckum.
On completion, the new generating unit in Duisburg-Walsum will have an efficiency of 45% and be the most modern hard-coal-fired power plant in Germany. Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in 2010.
Power Experience
Previously, Balcke-Dürr secured the orders for the new 950 MW and 1100 MW lignite-fired units of the Niederaussem and Neurath power plants (BoA 1, 2, 3) respectively. The company also is or has supplied critical components for geothermal power plants in Iceland and for nuclear power plants in Sweden and Switzerland.
