Harley-Davidson® Finds a Single-Source Diagnostics Solution

With computer technology constantly changing and technically advanced features like electronic throttle control planned for its upcoming models, Harley-Davidson knew it had to stay on the leading edge of diagnostics to keep its service technicians knowledgeable, proficient and up-to-date — and  its customers happy.

The solution — team up again with SPX® Kent-Moore ®, the SPX company they worked with previously to launch the highly successful Digital Technician®. Introduced after two years of research, the revolutionary tool raised the bar for diagnostic equipment in the vehicle industry and quickly became the standard for Harley-Davidson dealers globally.

Making the Best Better

Over a 15-month period, Harley-Davidson and SPX Kent-Moore worked together to develop an even more powerful and versatile motorcycle diagnostic tool — the Digital Technician® II. Like its predecessor, the Digital Technician II features proprietary software, custom engineered for Harley-Davidson. Integrated with off-the-shelf PC technology the enhanced diagnostic tool boasts the latest technologies including Bluetooth™ wireless.

It also incorporates the full range of Harley-Davidson service resources in a single tool, including service manuals, bulletins, dealership web portals, access to proprietary dealer management systems and other information previously only available from multiple sources.

How It Works

As with the original Digital Technician, service technicians connect the Digital Technician II’s laptop computer to the Techlink™ II Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) that connects to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) on the motorcycle.

In addition to reading diagnostic trouble codes and data items, the Digital Technician II provides guided diagnostics with animated wiring diagrams, on-board electronic service manuals, Bluetooth-enabled Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) and access to other Harley-Davidson applications.

The combination of that hardware plus the SPX custom-designed diagnostics software is used by the technician to diagnose and service the motorcycle.

A Better Experience

When equipped with the Digital Technician II program, Harley-Davidson service and diagnostic technicians experience improved productivity. For service managers, it means being able to increase throughput. For Harley-Davidson’s customers, it means a higher level of service quality aimed at improving the overall Harley-Davidson experience.

The Digital Technician II is exclusive to Harley-Davidson and is used in their worldwide dealer network of 1,500 dealers/service centers in approximately 70 countries.
