SPX is helping companies tap the power of renewable energy by applying its expertise in thermal technologies to the production of geothermal and other power sources. A key example lies in SPX’s work for an independent utility service in Iceland.
SPX Cooling Technologies and Balcke-Dürr, the SPX companies working with the utility, are supplying the complete cold-end solution (cooling system) for five geothermal power plants to be built at the base of the Hengill volcano in Iceland.
Complete Cold-End Solutions
The contract includes engineering, design, manufacturing and installation of a steam condensing system utilizing multiple SPX heat exchangers.
Encore Performance
This is not SPX’s first project for the Iceland-based utility service. In 2008, SPX Cooling Technologies and Balcke-Dürr completed two geothermal power plant units (consisting of two 40MW geothermal turbines) in Hellisheidi, Iceland. Two power plant units were previously delivered to the same company in 2006.
Nor is Iceland the only region to benefit from SPX’s expertise in cooling solutions for geothermal power plants. SPX equipment is installed on the world’s largest geothermal plant named the Geyser, located in California, as well as in Indonesia where that country is ramping up its geothermal production.
This international experience, combined with SPX’s expertise in the geothermal industry, makes SPX an ideal partner for utilities around the world who wish to tap into the potential of geothermal power generation.
