Like other high-speed rotation equipment, the industrial gas turbines produced by Rolls-Royce require a large volume of oil for lubrication, cooling and sealing of the bearings.
The bearing surfaces that the oil comes in contact with are very hot and rotate at high speeds. The high temperature and shearing action generates a large volume of very fine oil mist plus a considerable amount of vapor. The action of the oil mist and oil vapor being vented from the lube oil tank causes a visible plume. This oil plume is subject to increasingly stringent environmental laws and regulations at all government levels throughout the world.
A Solution from Dollinger
As the result of four years of design, development and testing in cooperation with Rolls-Royce®, Dollinger, an SPX company, developed the OE-258R-500 Oil Mist Eliminator (OME) for use with the Rolls-Royce Industrial RB211 gas turbine.The RB211 industrial gas turbine, derived from the aerospace RB211, is used for a variety of power generation and mechanical drive applications, including those in harsh environments and remote locations.
The Dollinger OME stops oil mist from entering the RB211’s air intake, preventing power loss and reducing the need for maintenance due to oil mist infiltration. It also eliminates the visible oil plume.
Designed in accordance with Rolls-Royce technical specifications, the Dollinger OE-258R-500 can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each RB211 engine; all new Rolls Royce® Industrial RB211 gas turbines are now equipped with the Dollinger OME as standard.

The Dollinger OME also offers exceptional efficiency — 99.97% of all droplets and particles 0.3 micron and larger with less than 5 ppm by weight oil mist carryover — providing reliability and performance in a simple, compact design.
