Working with Hitachi Power Africa (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Hitachi Power Europe GmbH (HPE), SPX is providing key products for the new Kusile Power Station in South Africa. (See the press release announcing the project.) The plant is just one of the new or upgraded facilities, which SPX is working on in South Africa.
Designed to consume significantly less water than a conventional coal-fired power plant, the Kusile plant will rely in part on SPX’s feedwater heaters and air-cooled condensers to help minimize water usage.
Equally important, the highly efficient filters and airpreheaters supplied by SPX will help reduce emissions and contribute to the plant’s efficiency.
Saving Energy Around the World
SPX components and technology are also helping to reduce energy and resource usage at a number of power plants around the world. In China, SPX currently is supplying dry cooling systems for Salaqi and Haibowan (Inner Mongolia) power plants and for the Midong (Xinjiang) and Hequ (Shanxi) power plants. (See the press release announcing the project.)
The dry cooling systems are being designed to help reduce water consumption by approximately 90% as compared to other, wet-cooling, types of cooling systems, in line with the efforts and policies of the Chinese authorities to save water resources.
While the company’s dry cooling systems have largely been of interest for installations in areas where water is a scarce resource, the company is gaining more interest from companies in areas of the Americas who are interested in employing cooling technology that can help minimize water usage and other environmental impacts.
Among them is a clean-coal power plant in Virginia for the power division of The Shaw Group Inc. (See the press release announcing the project.)
Headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, The Shaw Group Inc. is a leading global provider of technology, engineering, procurement, construction, maintenance, fabrication, manufacturing, consulting, remediation and facilities management services for government and private sector clients in the energy, chemical, environmental, infrastructure and emergency response markets.
