With several power plant projects underway in South Africa, critical components installed at most major mining operations throughout the African continent and a well established place in many of South Africa’s food and beverage manufacturing facilities, SPX is proving to be more than just another supplier to Africa.
Nigel-based Operations
Our manufacturing presence in South Africa was established in 1970 in Nigel not far from Johannesburg. We expanded our existing facility in 2008 and now have over 300,000 square feet of manufacturing capacity.
Our manufacturing presence in Nigel allows us to meet the domestic content requirements to these projects. Additionally the shareholder structure of our South African entity complies with local governments requiring bidding on these projects.
Committed to using local labor for manufacturing support, SPX has approximately 50 employees working for its process equipment business in the region, as well as approximately 500 permanent and contract employees working at offices in Woodmead and Nigel and at four major sites, including Camden, Komati, Sasol Secunda and KBR Sasol.
Extensive Commitment
The SPX family of companies in South Africa includes Balcke-Dürr and SPX Cooling Technologies/DB Thermal, which supply cooling towers and thermal components for power plants and serve as major service providers for existing power plants in South Africa.
SPX Process Equipment also maintains a strong presence in Africa. Mixers from Lightnin, an SPX brand, have long been common fixtures throughout Africa’s vast network of mining operations. In recent years, the company has supplied well over 60 large mixers across the continent – including at mine operations at Bibiani, Oubuasi and Iduapriem in Ghana.
Some of South Africa’s leading breweries also feature APV brewing systems and equipment.
