When people think back to the 2008 summer games, they will remember Michael Phelps’ unprecedented eight gold medals. The real legacy of the games, however, may be the billions of dollars of infrastructure improvements put into place in Beijing — improvements that will continue having a positive impact on generations of Beijing citizens.
SPX played a significant role with the installation of cooling towers at eight venues.
Cool SPX Solutions
Intended to help keep athletes and spectators comfortable, the SPX solutions will continue providing comfort cooling as the facilitiesserve Chinese citizens and visitors in a variety of capacities for years to come.
For example, a facility used for many athletic events during the summer games will host some of China’s most important exhibitions, conventions and congresses when the facility reverts to its permanent use after post-Olympic renovations are completed.
The 20 SPX cooling towers installed in the facility will help ensure that visitors stay cool and comfortable. Because the SPX products employ evaporative cooling technology, they will also help save energy. (Evaporative cooling has been proven to save energy when compared to air-cooled HVAC products.)
The SPX products installed included Marley® NC cooling towers, among the few tower configurations that can be maintained while they are operating. (Cleaning and inspecting the distribution system does not require turning off the pumps.) All Marley NC cooling towers are designed for low sound levels using high-efficiency fans and low splash noise heat transfer media.
Energy Efficient and More
The cooling solutions provided by SPX are contributing to Beijing’s overall strategy of creating a “greener” city. Since announcing its eleventh five-year plan in 2005, China set ambitious environmental goals for the Olympics and beyond by focusing on increased energy efficiency and decreased emissions.
Energy efficient by design, the SPX solutions also have built-in functions to reduce the pollutants emitted into the air, as well as benefits such as reduced noise and lower maintenance requirements.
